FAQ

Where can we do our family photos?

I’m a Calgary family photographer and I also love capturing families all around Alberta. (And hey, don’t hesitate to reach out even if you’re a bit further away!)

When it comes to where we take the photos, it’s all about what works best for you and your kids. Many families find their home the coziest spot, but sometimes a new setting with some trees to climb and and a creek to explore can add a fun twist!

I’m all about thinking outside the box too. If you’re up for it, we can go to a totally unique location. I know plenty of fantastic spots around Calgary – beaches, bushland, parks – and I’m happy to suggest options close to you. But hey, if there’s a place that’s special to your family, let’s make it happen there!

How long does a family session take?

Family sessions can be 30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes based on the package you choose.

When is the best time of day for photos?

I can choose the best time of day that will work best for your photos. A general rule of thumb if we are outdoors is at least 90 minutes before sunset so we can catch the beautiful light. Indoor sessions can be done at any time.

What do we wear for family photos?

The best advice I can give you is to wear what makes you feel comfortable and most like yourself. Things to avoid would be too much of the same pattern or colour, one super bright colour amongst a bunch of neutrals, and any neon colours. I do offer styling advice as well so please do not hesitate to reach out.

What about bad weather?

As a family photographer, I recognize the unpredictability of Calgary’s weather. I do tend to monitor the forecast since it can swiftly transition from sunny to rainy. If conditions are too stormy or rainy, we’ll arrange a new date for your shoot.

How do you help kids engage?

Keeping children engaged during a photo session involves a blend of creativity, patience and flexibility. Here are some of the strategies I use.

1. Get to know them: Before the session starts, I take a few minutes to chat with the children and build rapport. This helps them feel comfortable and more willing to participate.
2. Use Props and Toys: Bringing along props or toys can capture children’s attention and keep them engaged. It could be something as simple as bubbles, balloons, or a favorite stuffed animal.
3. Incorporate Games and Activities: I often incorporate interactive games or activities into the session to keep things fun and lively. Games like Simon Says or Red Light, Green Light can be great for capturing natural expressions.
4. Be Playful and Animated: I maintain an upbeat and playful demeanor throughout the session. I might make silly faces, tell jokes, or play peek-a-boo behind the camera to elicit genuine smiles and laughter.
5. Let Them Be Themselves: I encourage children to express themselves and be natural during the shoot. Sometimes the best shots come when children are allowed to just be themselves and have fun.
6. Take Breaks: Children have shorter attention spans, so I make sure to schedule in short breaks during the session. This allows them to recharge and prevents them from getting restless or bored.
7. Involve Parents: I often involve parents in the session to help keep their children engaged. Parents can interact with their children, offer encouragement, or even join in on the fun.

Overall, the key is to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere where children feel comfortable expressing themselves. Flexibility is also important, as every child is unique and may respond differently to various strategies.

How long until we get our photos?

On average, it takes about two weeks for me to finish editing and send over the finalized images. I put a lot of care into perfecting each photo, so it may take a bit of time. But if you’re in a rush or have a deadline, just give me a heads-up, and I’ll do my best to work within your timeframe. Your satisfaction is important to me, and I want to ensure you’re happy with the results.

Do you offer printing/framing?

Absolutely, I’m thrilled to handle the printing and framing of your photos. Being involved in this process allows me to ensure the highest quality results, and I take great pride in offering top-notch printing services. Additionally, I offer exquisite photo books that beautifully showcase your memories. It’s important not to overlook the significance of printing your photos. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, but taking that extra step to preserve your memories and adorn your walls with them can truly breathe life into your home. Let me assist you in making your walls come alive with cherished moments captured through my lens.

“You captured me so well! I never thought I was photogenic. Thanks for making me look fabulous!”
